The Dirt on DIRTT: Michael Moore

Michael Moore, president of Synergy Business Environments, recalls the beginning of his professional relationships with DIRTT and Dillmeier Glass Company.

dirt-on-dirtt-michael-mooreMichael Moore, president of Nashville, Tenn.-based Synergy Business Environments, has been working in the officefurniture industry for years, gravitating toward it following college. He purchased the company back in 2001, transforming the then-small furniture dealer into a national, full-solution, contract furnishings and office systems dealer, with clients spanning the United States.

Besides its talented team of professionals who are committed to providing clients stunning finished products, key partnerships have played a significant hand in the company's steadfast growth.

Specifically, its professional relationship with customized interior manufacturer DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd., or simply DIRTT, helped expand Synergy Business Environments’ capabilities. First established in July 2006, the partnership is a key component of the organization’s success.

“We were just a furniture dealer at that point, and were looking to go into other vertical markets, and were trying to move into specialized design markets, and it felt like interior construction was a good fit for us,” recalls Moore.

The beauty of DIRTT resides in the endless possibilities of its creations, he shares.

“There’s no standardization or product, and it’s something different every time,” says Moore.

"DIRTT is constantly evolving, and so is the construction industry. It’s our job to keep in front of these changes, and be sure to educate this particular industry on what we do and why we do it," he adds.

This enables Synergy Energy Environments, who is also a partner with systems furniture manufacturer Allsteel, to customize full solutions “with embedded technology, graphics,” and other features that breathe life into an interior space, Moore explains.

Not only did this partnership give Synergy Business Environments access to unique design software and pre-fabricated construction solutions, but it also played an integral role in the development of another invaluable relationship—with commercial interior glass manufacturer Dillmeier Glass Company.

dil-1-02.jpgFrom the very beginning, DIRTT encouraged its partners to “outsource something from a different channel” if need be, says Moore. This led the manufacturer to refer him to the Dillmeier Glass Company as a resource they could use on the glass front for future projects. Fast forward a decade later, and Synergy Business Environments solely works with Dillmeier as its commercial glass fabricator.

While the quality products Dillmeier Glass produces and its exceptional lead times play a major role in why the professional relationship has been so positive, Moore highlights another key aspect: the people.

He specifically singles out Phyllis Cooper, Dillmeier Glass' assistant plant manager/sales.

“Obviously, any time you have a relationship like we’ve had with Dillmeier, it’s about the people, and she’s great,” says Moore, adding that she's “been the stable go-to person [since] we’ve worked with them.”

The Synergy Business Environments president says his team communicates with Cooper on a regular basis, even pointing out that he spoke to her twice the day before his interview for this story.

Over the years, Synergy Business Environments has left its mark on numerous corporate, government, healthcare and educational interiors, with incredible results.

Although Moore is proud of every project the company has worked on—which can take anywhere from a half a day to 10 weeks to complete, he explains, there are some more memorable than others.

“The level of design really dictates the ones you really remember,” he says.

HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) Skypark, one of the healthcare services provider’s locations, is but one example. Utilizing both DIRTT and Dillmeier Glass, it was a great opportunity for Synergy Business Environments, explains Moore.

“We did the whole project turnkey,” he shares. “It was about a $4 million project, and that was pretty huge for us.”

“The ideal project is the ones that we aspire to chase and to win, and these days, are full-solution projects,” he says. “That’s where we’re starting to see our success.”

Moore shares that whatever challenges are faced during the process are well worth it when he inspects the completed project.

“I think the obvious challenge [when working on any project] is where we fall on the food chain,” he says, explaining that his team waits for the general contractors “to build out their piece” of the project before they can come in and measure. Although measurement errors are extremely rare, he adds, the glass fabricator “has always been a good partner in helping get those things resolved quickly."

Seeing the end result is priceless, says Moore, and things don’t seem to be slowing down, either—which means even more complete projects for him and his team to look forward to.

“We’re lucky," he shares. "I think our message is getting out there. This is going to be a great year, from things way beyond glass, to healthcare, to other things. So the horizon is great.”
